Note: All positions require the Initial Volunteer Orientation. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. The majority of volunteers are needed for bird care during baby season. Baby season starts in late April and runs through the end of September. Off-season needs include fund raising, special events and outreach.
Bird Care: Bird care at the Rescue Center will consist of daily food preparation, feeding birds and cleaning their cages. Duties will also include sweeping & mopping floors, washing dishes, cleaning & straightening cabinets and cleaning carriers, cages, aviaries, etc. Minimum Requirements: Minimum of one four hour shift every other week for three months. Required Training: Feeding and handling of birds is species specific. Training will be on going as various species arrive at WBR.
Special Events: Special events include assisting at our fund raisers and representing Wild Bird Rescue at events such as the Home & Garden Show, Eco Fair, Earth Day and volunteer recruitment opportunities at various colleges and businesses. Minimum Requirements: Volunteers will be contacted as events occur. Required Training: Become Familiar with WBR practices & issues and accompaniment with experienced volunteers until comfortable.
Grounds Maintenance and Construction: Grounds Maintenance consists of mowing and trimming yard(s), maintaining landscaping and assisting with the creation of new landscapes. Construction will be minor building / fencing repairs, cage construction, etc. Minimum Requirements: A three month commitment with monthly participation. Required Training: As needed per task.
Transport Donations: Volunteers will pick up and transport donations from various businesses and local citizens and bring them to the Rescue Center. Minimum Requirements: Three month commitment with monthly participation.
Transport Birds: Until we get our shore bird aviary and raptor aviary built we transfer these birds to facilities that can rehabilitate them. These birds are transported to Hutchins, Southlake or Lubbock, TX. Minimum Requirements: A three month commitment; volunteers will be contacted as needed. Required Training: Hand out and briefing on transporting wild birds.
